Peter Troxler (NL)
organisation: Design Platform Limburg

Peter Troxler is an independent researcher at the interface of business, society and technology. Peter
conducts research on business models for the open-source era – open design, open hardware, open
inventions – and the required formats and societal systems for innovation and co-creation. He is
particularly interested in studying the impact of post-industrial production (open-source based, personal
digital production) on the mainstream manufacturing industry. In this context, Peter and his colleagues
from Premsela and the Waag Society released the book Open Design Now in 2011.

Peter Troxler has a PhD in industrial engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology
(ETH Zurich). He has worked as a project leader of automation projects in the manufacturing industry,
management consultant, and research manager in the fields of knowledge management and technology.
Since founding his first independent theatre company in 1994, Peter has also been active in applying and
innovating entrepreneurship and project management in the creative sector. He has been involved in the
international Fab Lab movement since 2008.

Open Design is Value Creation
Just 50 years ago, Roland Barthes published his essay on la mort de l'auteur, which quickly became
a credo for postmodernists. Techniques such as remix and mash-up have changed the arts through
digital technologies and made Barthes’s prediction a reality – particularly in music, painting, photography
and film. Now, digital technologies are reaching the world of design. Design and production techniques
that were once exclusive and expensive have become accessible for everyone. These post-industrial
techniques offer an alternative to mass production, in many respects representing a return to methods
that are more reminiscent of traditional crafts. In this way, they shift the balance between professional and
amateur design and production. For designers, this changing context offers an opportunity that can be
translated into a new design practice.

A-Z lectures take place on Tuesday at Zebrazaal at Z33.
