pit | opening event new work by Gijs Van Vaerenbergh & Tadashi Kawamata

With pit Z33 presents art in the public space of Borgloon.
Borgloon is a city in the region of Haspengouw, sometimes referred to as the Flemish Tuscany. Haspengouw is a typical cultural landscape, designed by human hands according to the local needs. pit zooms in on three recurring themes in the region.
As of June 2011 in the region of Borgloon you can find some remarkable artworks that will make you look differently at the environment. pit is an organic project that will evolve month after month.
On Saturday September 24, Z33 will officially present two new artworks of the project pit.
That day Reading between the Lines by Gijs Van Vaerenbergh will be officially opened. The architects Gijs Van Vaerenbergh (BE) built a new church set in the middle of the countryside, constructed from thin layers of steel. Because of this special construction method, the landscape remains visible through the church, both from far away and nearby. In this way, the church is both present as well as absent in the landscape.
The end result of the project at the 'Burchtheuvel' by Tadashi Kawamata (JP) will also be exposed. Tadashi Kawamata builds large wooden sculptures in open spaces. In Borgloon, he undertakes a workshop with 30 students architecture, interior architecture and visual arts, in dialog with the ‘Burchtheuvel’ in the centre of the village. You can visit the result as from September 24.
