Germaine Kruip pays tribute to a vanished ferry in Maasmechelen

Maasmechelen will soon welcome a special artwork: 'Reflection' by Dutch artist Germaine Kruip. The sound sculpture will be installed at the historic site of the former ferry between Meeswijk and Urmond, serving as a poetic tribute to the connection across the Meuse.

A silent force on the riverbank

‘Reflection’ is not just an artwork; it is also an instrument. A five-meter-long brass bar, suspended between two slender ten-meter-high poles, produces a deep sound when visitors strike it with a specially designed mallet. The tone echoes the bell of the old ferry that could still be heard at this spot until the 1950s – a subtle invitation to calm, reflection, and connection.

Two black granite benches complete the work. They invite visitors to sit down, let the sound resonate, and take in the view over the river.
According to Corrie Bemelmans, alderwoman for culture in Maasmechelen, the artwork is much more than a visual addition:
“‘Reflection’ is a silent force on our riverbank. It offers a place to unwind and invites us to rediscover our landscape – with fresh eyes and ears.”

Where and when?

The sculpture will be installed along the dike by the Meuse, between cycling nodes 50 and 56, about one kilometer from the car ferry. The orange (10 km) and blue (5 km) hiking trails in the Leut walking area also pass by this spot.

If everything goes according to plan, visitors will be able to come and listen, look, and experience it themselves by the end of August 2025.
