gabi dao (Canada, b. 1991) comes from the unceded and ancestral territories of the Xʷməθkwəy̓əm, Skwxwú7mesh, and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh Nations, and currently lives and works in the Netherlands. Their practice focuses on the friction between fear and empathy in stories of species intermingling, and on the ways cinematic media can propose new forms of connection.
Dao’s work has been presented at E-flux Screening Room (Brooklyn), British Film Institute London Film Festival, Southern Alberta Art Gallery (Lethbridge), Radius CCA (Delft), The National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa), the 36th Ljubljana Biennale, and Vincom Centre for Contemporary Art (Hà Nội). They have undertaken residencies at Triangle Astérides (Marseille), EKWC (Oisterwijk), and Jan van Eyck Academy Maastricht (2025).
