Amber Andrews

Swirls of tenderness

A statue of the Virgin Mary once drifted ashore in Hasselt, leading to the construction of a chapel on that very spot. Today, the chapel is nestled within the façade of Z33. Such a story is a treasure trove for an artist. Amber Andrews draws inspiration from these myths and legends, which blur the lines between truth and fiction. This ambiguity between folklore and documented history has long been a central theme in her work.

Fertile place

The chapel’s round shape evokes the sense of an embrace, a womb, a pregnant belly – perfect symbolism for the Virga Jesse celebrations. The theme had been decided. In such a fertile setting, it was only natural for her creation to evolve into a tribute to women and femininity.

Wooden cocoon

To shape the interior, Amber Andrews selected the architects Leander Venlet and Pauline Clarot. They restored the chapel’s intimacy with an oval wooden shell, serving as a canvas for the mural. In just 10 square metres, a rich convergence of elements unfolds. Five alcoves weave together various facets such as Z33 as an institution, the city, and its Christian heritage. The design includes a small bench, a spot for the original statue of the Virgin Mary, and a wall opening providing direct views into the Z33 museum.

Tribute to women

Andrews is deeply fascinated by how women have been portrayed across centuries. An icon like Mary cannot be overlooked in art history, and this chapel is no exception. The 16th-century statue of Mary is no longer alone. It is joined by other women. Each figure actively participates, challenging the traditional art portrayal of women as mere objects of beauty.
