Nr. 14 Light Play

Nr. 14 LIGHT PLAY revolves round the themes of light, space and time. The exhibition space ‘Vleugel ’58’ (‘Wing ’58’) at the art centre Z33 enjoys an exceptional incidence of light and outstanding spatial proportions: characteristics that sparked off the project LIGHT PLAY.
The artworks selected for the show demonstrate a similar practice. Most works of art in this exhibition use light as a medium and query the concepts of space and time, they look into reality and the powers of observation and perception. The artworks, then, have an attitude in common, rather than a movement or trend. The artworks in this show stage an extraordinary sensory experience and make the spectator dwell upon spatial and temporal perception.

The title LIGHT PLAY is borrowed from László Moholy-Nagy’s film ‘Ein Lichtspiel Schwarz weiss grau (A Lightplay Black White Gray)’, a seminal work in art history. In this film – that dates from 1930 László Moholy-Nagy captures the rays of light of his well-known ‘Licht-Raum-Modulator’. Moholy-Nagy pursued and experimented with the possibilities of light to illustrate the time-space relationship.
