Kanda
For Stéphane Galland, rhythm is the heartbeat of jazz: alive, pulsating and constantly in motion. With his brand new trio Kanda, he will be performing at Z33 on 12 February, his first stop in Limburg.
In jazz, rhythm is much more than a tight beat: it breathes, guides and flows through the music. Few have mastered this art like master drummer Stéphane Galland. Known for his work with the legendary jazz band Aka Moon, among others, he is now starting a fresh musical chapter with Kanda.
The trio consists of Louise van den Heuvel (bass) and Lúcia Pires (flute), two up-and-coming talents who, together with Galland, create an adventurous soundscape centred on complex grooves and surprising colours.
The name Kanda appears in various languages and cultures, with meanings that refer to rhythm, love and energy channels — associations that perfectly match the versatility of the trio. The combination of flute, bass and drums is broken open in a variety of ways. Thanks to effects, keyboards and the EWI (electronic wind instrument), new timbres are constantly being created. When the music calls for it, Louise and Lúcia add their voices, giving Kanda’s palette extra depth and emotion.
