Through the eyes of the artist: Luc Tuymans & Mohammed Sami

Z-Talk #1

On Sunday 26 April, painters Luc Tuymans and Mohammed Sami will discuss how artists deal with conflict, memory and representation. How can art depict violence without showing it literally? And what does it mean to view the world as an artist today?

Luc Tuymans (BE, b. 1958) is internationally regarded as one of the most important contemporary painters and has been exploring for decades how images simultaneously reveal and conceal. During a studio visit to Mohammed Sami, he once gave him the advice: “Paint the sound of the bullet, not the bullet.” Sami (IQ, b. 1984) draws on memories of his childhood in Iraq and his flight from the country, and is today regarded as one of the most promising painters of his generation.

The conversation will be moderated by Nicky Aerts and concluded with questions from the audience. Between the talks, gambist Romina Lischka will provide moments of musical tranquillity with a Cello Suite by Bach.
