Jan Boelen graduated as a product designer at the Media and Design Academy (KHLim) in Genk, which is now the MAD-faculty. He is the former artistic director at Z33 House for Contemporary Art, Design and Architecture in Hasselt, Belgium and Head of the Master Department Social Design at the Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands.

He is chairman of the Committee on architecture and design of the Flemish community. By order of the provincial delegation of the province of Limburg, Jan Boelen reformed the provincial Centre for Visual Arts to Z33 House for Contemporary Art.

In his work as a curator, Jan Boelen has worked together with Raf Simons, Studio Makkink & Bey, John Körmeling, Thomas Lommée, Dunne & Raby, Martí Quixé, Aldo Bakker, Konstantin Grcic, Joseph Grima and many others. In addition to the exhibitions in Z33 House for Contemporary Art, Z33 also organizes projects in the open space, but also projects on behalf of other organizations.

To the initiative of Z33 and the province of Limburg, Manifesta 9 took place in Belgium in 2012. In 2014, Jan Boelen curated BIO 50 – 24th Biennial of Design Ljubljana in Slovenia and has led a series of international debates on the future of design.
