Z33 was one of five finalists for the Mies van der Rohe Award 2022, but unfortunately was unable to cash in on the prestigious architecture award. The winner of this edition is Town House, the newest building at Kingston University in London.

The Mies van der Rohe Award is the European Union’s biennial architecture prize. The award rewards the best new architectural buildings in Europe. The Irish architecture bureau Grafton Architects won the architecture prize for the Town House project, an educational building designed for Kingston University in London. The jury praised the Town House project for its remarkable environmental quality that creates an excellent atmosphere for studying, gathering, dancing and being together: “The building creates an emotional experience from the inside and through its multi-level colonnade that creates a homely atmosphere on different levels. It hosts dance, library and study spaces by using layers of silence and layers of sound that work together perfectly.” This is the first time a university building has won the architecture award.

Finalist Z33

Town House prevailed over 532 other projects from 41 countries, including 26 Belgian ones. Z33 was the only Belgian candidate to make it to the finals. That is why we look back on the whole process with pride.

" Obviously, we were disappointed not to be able to bring prize to Hasselt. Francesca Torzo designed a beautiful building where visitors can still discover architecture in all its facets every day.
Yet there is above all a sense of pride in having made it to the five finalists. I would also like to congratulate the winner, because the Town House is a place of very high quality."

Adinda Van Geystelen, Artistic Director Z33

In the context of the Mies van der Rohe Award, we are also organizing unique guided tours through our building on May 14 and 28. We have mapped out an exclusive route along the exhibitions and behind the scenes. This way you will get a glimpse of what the building normally does not show. You can register for the guided tour of 14.05 here and for the 28.05 tour here
