A-Z night #12: Housing the Human

Prototypes for coexistence

How will we live together in the future? Would it be possible for us to completely rethink the way we design our homes? This question was the point from which five selected designers – Certain Measures (DE, US), Mae-Ling Lokko (GH/PH,US), Simone C Niquille (CH/NL), Lucia Tahan (ES/DE) and Dasha Tsapenko (UA/NL) – started to create ideas and develop them into prototypes for future ways of building homes. These varied from a circular kitchen system that upcycles food waste into building materials, to a living space that will autonomously adjust to the needs of its residents, and more. The designers will present their final prototypes and review their journey; what does this all mean for them as designers and for the architecture and design discourse in general? Jan Boelen will ask questions and moderate the discussion.

Housing the Human wants to bring arts, science and technological innovation together and serve as a catalyst for experimentation. Housing the Human is a collaboration between Forecast (Berlin), MAXXI (Rome), The Copenhagen Architecture Festival (CAFx), acatech (the German Academy of Science and Engineering) and Z33 (Hasselt). Five preselected concepts will enter a one year development period, which will be introduced by the collaborating organisations to a wider audience in subsequent stages. The A-Z night will be the final step of this journey and will bring the exhibition Housing Apart Together of vzw Architectuurwijzer to a close. It will take place at the C-mine Cultuurcentrum Genk from Thursday, October 10, until Sunday, January 5, 2020.
